Proper packaging is crucial for long-distance shipping to protect goods from handling, vibration, changes in climate, and potential impact. The key is using quality materials and appropriate techniques tailored to the item being shipped.

Key Principles of Safe Packaging for Long-Distance Shipping

1. Choose the Right Container

  • Use New, Sturdy Boxes: Recycled boxes may have compromised structural integrity. Opt for new, high-quality corrugated cardboard boxes appropriate for the weight of your item. Double- or triple-walled boxes are best for heavy or fragile goods.
  • Size Matters: The box should be large enough to accommodate the item plus a minimum of 2 inches of cushioning material on all sides, but not so large that the item can move excessively inside.

2. Utilize Quality Cushioning Materials

  • Wrap Items Individually: Use bubble wrap, foam sheeting, or craft paper to protect individual components or items.
  • Fill Voids Effectively: Prevent items from shifting by filling all empty space within the box. Use materials like packing peanuts, air pillows, crinkled paper, or custom foam inserts. The goal is to ensure the item cannot move when the box is shaken.
  • Double Boxing for Fragile Items: Place the individually wrapped item in a smaller box with ample cushioning, then place that smaller box into a larger outer box, filling the space between the two with more cushioning.

3. Seal Securely

  • Use Strong Tape: Only use high-quality packing tape (pressure-sensitive tape at least 2 inches wide). Avoid using masking tape, duct tape, or string, as they do not provide a secure seal.
  • Tape all Seams: Apply tape to all three seams on both the top and bottom of the box, using the "H" taping method to ensure every flap edge is covered.

4. Label Clearly and Correctly

  • Clear Labels: Remove all old labels or markings. Place the new shipping label clearly on the top surface of the box. Include both the sender's and recipient's full address and contact information.
  • Markings for Handling: Use "Fragile" or "This Way Up" stickers only if necessary and in addition to robust packaging—never as a substitute for it. Handlers are trained to treat all packages with care, and robust internal packaging is the best defense.
